Gail E. “Goober” Godby of Sheridan, Indiana passed away peacefully on June 27, 2026, at the age of 88. He was a devoted husband, dad, grandpa, great-grandpa, son, brother, uncle, friend, and public servant. Gail’s life was one of kindness, handshake honors, community service, integrity and a deep-rooted love for his family.

Gail was born on August 9, 1937, to the late Harold E. and Mary Alice (Bowen) Godby in Sheridan, Indiana. He was raised on the family farm and throughout his life he helped Harold with the farm using his vacation time from Shell to put in the crops.

Gail’s love for family never wavered. He is survived by the love of his life Melanie (Simmons) Godby. They shared 43 years together, 41 years and 8 months of the 43 years they spent married. He is survived by his children Bobby (Sarah) Godby, Chuck (Kim) Godby, Joe (Lisa) Godby, and Carrie (Bryan) Pitts. Gail was a proud grandpa to 11 grandchildren, and a great grandpa to 11 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Jim Godby, his sister Betty Ayers, and his stepmother Rosemary Godby along with his sisters-in-laws Marge Godby, Paula Simmons, several nieces and nephews, and his dogs and cat. Gail was preceded in death by his parents, his grandson Cameron Godby, his step grandson Eric Evasic and his brother Neal Godby.

Gail was taught the lesson of hard work and taking pride in your work at a young age. Gail helped on the family farm, and he drove a gas tanker semi for 30 years at Shell Oil Company. Over his 30 years of delivering fuel at the stations, he made many friendships throughout his routes. When he decided it was time to retire he had logged 4 million miles without any accidents. He also served as the President of the Teamsters Union at Shell Oil in Indiana for several years. Gail also owned and operated the Sheridan Car wash which became the morning hangout for many; where he always had coffee, a friendly card game being played along with lots of laughs and stories being told.

Gail graduated from Sheridan High School, class of 1955. While he attended high school, he played basketball where he was an outstanding player and even got to share the court playing with his brother Neal.

Gail embraced being a husband and father. He coached and mentored his children in football, baseball, and softball. Where he was able to teach many life lessons. Gail and Jim Steeves were instrumental in starting Sheridan’s elementary football program. He also hosted a women’s softball league tournament in 1981 at Biddle Park that his future wife played in. Gail believed not only in coaching and mentoring young minds he also served as the first President of Biddle Park making sure the park was pristine for the community.

Gail was a 10-year member of 4H, a state champion in dairy judging, and he was a member of Sheridan First United Methodist Church. He was proud to be elected and serve on the Adams Township advisory board for many years serving has board president for most of them. One of his proudest accomplishments was being able to provide the Sheridan Fire Department with a new fire engine.

Gail enjoyed playing golf, he was a Nascar Racing Fan, and he would look forward to going to races every year with his family and friends. He was an avid IU Fan and very rarely missed a game on TV. Gail always looked forward to going to the horse track and casino with his sons and friends each week.

Gail will be missed by many and will be remembered as a man who never met a stranger. He had a servant’s heart who was very giving and had a heart of gold. He was a man of integrity and believed you should look someone in the eyes and shake hands on a deal.
