Marilyn Jean (Godby) Jones, 89, passed away peacefully Saturday, November 29, 2025, surrounded by her family.
Born on September 11, 1936, in Sheridan, Indiana, she was the daughter of Robert F. Godby and Mary D. (Gallimore) Godby. She lived in Sheridan with her parents and younger brother, Bobby, until the family moved to Frankfort in 1948. She was active in school in many activities, especially instrumental music, where her talent shined and whereas a freshman she met the love of her life, Lynn Jones. After high school she graduated top of her class from Comptometer School where she held the record for the shortest completion time. She spent her life in business accounting with long careers with her employers. She went to college for the first time at age 50 to obtain a degree in Health Care Administration, passing both state and federal exams on the first try.
The most important things were her faith and her family. Her deep faith was key to how she lived her life and raised her family. The foundation was set growing up in the Baptist church then later as a founding member of the Zionsville Presbyterian Church. With her move to Sheridan, she is currently a member of the Sheridan First United Methodist Church.
Jean was blessed to be lifelong friends with even her high school class of seventy-one years meeting monthly until earlier this year. Her time, energy, and most of all love went to her family. First to her husband of fifty-three years, then to their two daughters, four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. They were her world and her keen memory was always bringing stories to light. She loved to travel…anytime, anyplace and with (almost) anyone. She was able to visit Europe and some islands in the Caribbean, but driving this country was her favorite. She visited 49 states with only Hawaii remaining on the list. Her most recent trip was in June with her daughters, covering nearly 4000 miles to revisit some family vacation spots she hadn’t seen in years. In her later years, she found love again and also a wonderful travel companion. Together, she and Tom had many more adventures. She always had a few projects in progress as she loved to knit and do cross-stitch, but her first love was reading. She was a veracious reader until her sight diminished two years ago.
Her family was her world. She is survived by daughters - Susie Browning of Sheridan, Debbie (Kevin) Peterson of Peru; grandchildren – Michael (Sarah) Browning of Lebanon, Kathryn (Dan) Grose of Noblesville, Josh Wood of Longmont, CO, and Sarah (James) Lewis of Peru. Her great-grandchildren include Emma Browning, Lebanon, Lillian Grose, Noblesville, and RayLynn, Elijah, and William Lewis of Peru.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Mary Godby, brother Robert L. Godby, husband of 53 years, Lynn A. Jones, granddaughter Adalynn Faith Grose, and partner, Thomas Godby.
