Obituary

Mary Arlene (Long) Pettigrew, 88 of Kirklin, Indiana, was called home on Friday, June 28, 2024, surrounded by her family. She was born on March 12, 1936, to the late Ray E. and Ardath (Raines) Long in Hamilton County, Indiana.

Arlene earned her degree as a Licensed Practical Nurse and over the years she cared for people and their families at Monticello Health Care, Carmel Care and Riverwalk Village.

Arlene met the love of her life, Arnold, and they were married in Jeffersonville, Indiana on May 17, 1952, and the two of them have been at each other's side for 72 years.

Arlene and Arnold wanted their foundation to be based on faith and family. Arlene made sure her children attended church as they were growing up. Arlene and Arnold attended Six Points Wesleyan Church in Sheridan until they moved year-round to Florida.

Arlene was a woman of many talents. She was an artist who enjoyed working with oils and pastels. She enjoyed painting Biblical, landscape, and still life paintings. She also enjoyed sewing clothes, quilting, crocheting, knitting, and also the ancient art of tatting. She knitted many prayer shawls for shut-ins and nursing home residents.

Arlene studied martial arts and had a green belt in Karate. She also studied Tai Chi. She enjoyed playing golf, going to quilt shows, and being with her friends and family. Arlene will be greatly missed by her family, and they will cherish the values and the skills she and Arnold have taught them over the years.

She leaves behind her husband of 72 years, Arnold, their five children Allen (Marcia) Pettigrew of Westfield, Marianna Hoffman of Florida, Dale (Barb) Pettigrew of Texas, Tracey (Dennis) Hobson of Florida, Mike (Julie) Pettigrew of Kirklin. She was a loving grandmother to 12 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren. She is survived by her sister, Rose (Monte) Lucas. She is preceded in death by her son-in-law Pete Hoffman, and her brothers Ed Long and Don Long.
