Terry Lee (Hutch) Hutchens of Sheridan passed away at home on the morning of October 10 with his wife, Nancy, at his side. Terry was born October 1, 1955, in Noblesville, Indiana, to the late William and Sherri (Overdorf) Hutchens.
He graduated from Sheridan High School with the class of 1974, where he was active in FFA and served as chapter president. He went on to build a career on the road as a professional truck driver with Wallace Grain and Beck’s Hybrids, logging an extraordinary 6,000,000 miles behind the wheel of a semi-truck.
Terry was a gentle soul with a loving heart, caring hands, and an easygoing spirit. He had a way of making life a little lighter with his wonderful sense of humor. His nickname, Hutch, was shared with his brother, but Terry was quick to remind everyone that he was the original Hutch.
As much as Terry loved the open road, his greatest pride and deepest love were found in his family. He was exceptionally proud of his son’s service in Afghanistan with the United States Army. His daughter was the light of his eyes. A trip to California to visit her was a treasured experience. While the sights were memorable, one of the greatest highlights of that visit was watching his granddaughter play softball.
Terry cherished every opportunity to spend time with his grandchildren. Whether he was teaching a granddaughter to drive a tractor, taking the kids to the movies, or cheering them on at the ballpark, he was happiest being a part of their lives. These moments, both big and small, tell the story of a grandfather whose love showed itself through his time, attention, and the things he did for them.
When Terry needed time for himself, he climbed on his Harley and headed out for some “wind therapy.” He found a sense of freedom and peace in the simple pleasure of being out riding. One of his more memorable biking experiences was riding the Dragon’s Tail Trail near the Great Smoky Mountains.
Though the road may have ended for Terry, his memory will travel on forever. Rest easy, Hutch, you will be deeply missed and forever loved.
Terry is survived by his wife, Nancy (Lindenmayer) Hutchens; his son, Bill Hutchens; his daughter, Crystal Florez; step-daughters Carmen Sanders, Cheryl Buzan, Angie Kerr, Holly Bir, and Emma Hawn; and step-son Zachary Hawn; his brother, Larry Hutchens; his sister, Alisa Bagby; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and honorary sons Menno Hilty and Will Decker.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 17 at 12 noon, with calling from 10 am to noon at the Sheridan First United Methodist Church, 207 E. Second Street, Sheridan, IN. Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Everyone is welcome to sign the guestbook, send a condolence, or share a memory at fisherfamilyfunerals.com.
